Talcott Parsons (født 13. desember 1902, død 8. mai 1979) er kanskje USAs mest kjente sosiolog. Parsons hadde stor innflytelse på sosiologien på 1950-og 1960-tallet. Han var knyttet til Harvard-universitet nesten hele livet sitt, og var en av hovedmennene bak et teoretisk system for samfunnsanalyse, kalt funksjonalisme. Den metod som valts är teoriprövande fallstudie där de teorier som vi prövar därför är en del av metoden vi använder oss av.Niklas Luhmann (1927 – 1998) var utbildad jurist men studerade även sociologi, vilket han även doktorerade i, bland annat på Harvard University under Talcott Parsons.
